Problem
The challenge was to explore how we might improve financial literacy. After some initial research, we discovered that a lack of financial literacy in adulthood is mainly due to a lack of exposure to financial education during childhood and adolescent years.
We also found that many believed financial literacy should be cultivated from young, but most parents have difficulty introducing difficult financial concepts to their children.
Problem Validation
We conducted a survey with 15 participants in order to validate this problem.
We found that almost half of them were not exposed to any form of financial education growing up
this includes both formal education (at school) and informal education (through parents, and other non-traditional means).
Even amongst those who did get some form of financial education growing up, many were only taught about the concept of
saving and did not learn other important concepts like investing, taxes, insurance, etc.
All of our participants agreed that early financial education is key to fostering the next generation of financially literate adults.
So, we asked ourselves, How might we make financial education more accessible to young children in order to cultivate good financial habits and knowledge that will be carried on to adulthood?
Solution
Little Broker, an app where
Users can browse through stories
Interact with characters by choosing outcomes for them
Earn rewards by going through lessons with digestible information
Buy items with rewards to build their own island and compete with friends for the best island
and to become the best little broker!
User Research
We created 2 user personas to get a better idea of who we were building the app for. We then created a comprehensive user story based on one of the personas.
Design
We started by creating wireframe sketches, and then low-fidelity screens.
We then drew our own illustrations for the app and designed the app interface for the high-fidelity prototype.
Reflection
This was my first time participating in a design-a-thon and I learned a lot about ideation, research, and design in such a short span of time.
If we had more time, I would have loved to do the following:
Finish hi-fi screens and prototype explore and profile pages
Conduct usability testing and make iterations
Make app more user friendly
Accessibility- analyzing color contrast
Placement and visibility
